Herding Instinct Test, 9am

The test will be held on Wed at the Purina Farms Herding site and will be conducted on Sheep during the National.  The event is sponsored by GSLSSC to provide a positive setting in which the dog is allowed to succeed at attempting to herd.

The Herding Instinct Test does not require the dog to have any prior experience on stock.  The test is to help dogs gain exposure to sheep and to determine the interest or desire to herd stock.  Sometimes dogs gain interest in the stock right away and other dogs need several introductions to stock before they become interested.

At the Tester, Tammy Van Deusen will help you entirely with the test.  She will help to get the dog interested in the stock.  Come an hour or so before your test time to take advantage of this opportunity to learn about livestock and their reactions to dogs.

What do you do the day of the test?

1. Arrive Early at least 1 hour before your scheduled time.

2. Have your dog on a buckle collar.  Not a chain or show collar.

3. Exercise your dog to become familiar with the site.

4. When your name is called, go to the stock gate and meet the Tester

5. Keep your dog on a leash.  Have your dog remain calm by your side.

6. Tell the tester your dog's name and how much exposure (if any) your dog has had to livestock.

The Tester will need to gauge your dogs reaction to the stock, so she may ask you to keep your dog on the leash, or on a long line.  The tester may also start dogs off leash, but it will depend upon the dog.

If your dog will show interest in the stock, you may not need to enter the pen with the stock.  However, if the dog is reluctant to focus on the stock and prefers to focus on the handler, you may be asked to go into the ring and stay close to the Tester to participate with the stock and the dog.

Participating in a Herding Instinct Test is a wonderful opportunity to determine if your dog has interest in stock.  Every dog has a different reaction to livestock.  Some dogs show and immediate interest, while other dogs will take several exposures to build their interest.  No matter what reaction your dog has to stock, you will both enjoy the experience.
